The arrival of one cockatoo usually heralds the arrival of many more in the days to come. Our first one came sqawking and swooping in thismorning. Maybe his mates will arrive soon?
Cockies are always a worry if you have wooden decks or verandas - they like to chew them. We had friends who had to replace the wooden railing around their decks. As a result they gave up on feeding ANY birds in the neighbourhood.
Our cocky visitors like to sit in the white cedar down near the creek and "prune" it. After a visit we have a litter of small branches and twigs that been cut off and fallen. They don't seem to eat them - just like to cut them off....

We've had a pair of King Parrots visiting for the last few days. They seem to appear for a few days, then they're gone for a couple of months.

NowI've added a bird blog, I just had to put in my favourite photos. These were taken in February and our galah visitors numbered up to about sixteen. Each day there were a few more. They're such fuss-pots and scrabble and squawk and all try to fit into the feeder box at the same time. When they arrive, they make such a fuss that the other birds all seem to depart in disgust, only to come back when peace returns.

It's been raining, so our Kookaburras are back. We've just had new grass put down and it came with its own population of worms so Kooka is looking to have a tasty lunch. Usually, when he arrives, our dog Daisy ends up "donating" some of her breakfast to him.

OUR OWL HAS A MATE!
Last week we saw the Powerful Owl in our Jacaranda tree. This week our neighbour, Steve, called us in to show us that there were now two owls sitting in the tree. Once more, they had a Ring-tail!

We have a new visitor!
We first saw one Powerful Owl sitting in the Jacaranda tree last week.
This is the (rather gruesome) photo I was able to take.
Yes, that's a Ring-tail Possum's tail hanging from his claws.
That's it! Just the tail.
Powerful Owls are the largest Australian owl species, being 40 to 50 cm tall. My book says their main diet is small rodents and Ring-tail possums. Our owls are definitely fond of the Ring-tail diet. His mate was there as well yesterday - and they had another Ring-tail.
We've had quite a few Brush-tail possums about but I hadn't seen the smaller Ring-tail, until the owl had it for dinner.
